Torcal and Dolmens for groups

This option for groups includes a guided tour of the Torcal de Antequera Natural Area and the Menga and Viera Dolmens, in a full day.

Torcal de Antequera Natural Area

The visit begins in the imposing landscape of the Torcal de Antequera, to which the entire morning is dedicated to hiking. It’s well worth it!

The Torcal de Antequera is a protected natural area which is located 15km from the city of Antequera. Its altitude, over 1200 meters, affords views of the Mediterranean Sea.

But more than the panoramic views, El Torcal de Antequera stands out for its dreamlike landscape. Huge blocks of stacked rocks, with unreal shapes, stretch as far as the eye can see. It is a veritable “sea of stone.”

In the case of guided tours for groups in this format, the Ammonite Route is the preferred option, as it is the most comprehensive and spectacular of the hiking routes. In addition to seeing marine fossils such as ammonites and belemnites, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the karst labyrinth of El Torcal de Antequera and the rest of the province.

Ammonite Route

  • Length (approx.): 4.50km
  • Duration (approx.): 3 hours with interpretive stops
  • Difficulty: low-medium (very rocky and irregular terrain, it is advisable to use mountain boots or similar footwear)
  • The guide will make various stops to interpret the landscape: panoramic views of the nearby environment (Sierra Nevada, Malaga Bay, Sierra de las Nieves, etc.), traces of marine fossils of Ammonites and Belemnites, remains of human settlements, karst formations, biodiversity native, etc.

However, if the group consists of elderly people, those with reduced mobility, or those who don’t have as much time, the hiking route through El Torcal will be adapted to the participants. In this case, the visit will be complemented with a guided tour of the Torcal Alto Visitor Center (museum and audiovisual presentation).

Menga and Viera Dolmens

Los Dólmenes de Menga y Viera se encuentran en la misma ciudad de Antequera, en el Conjunto Arqueológico Dólmenes de Antequera. Este archaeological enclave is the most important megalithic complex in Europe.

The Menga Dolmen it is the largest tomb and has a spectacular entrance. Composed of an atrium, corridor, and burial chamber, its construction with large stone slabs supported by three enormous pillars is particularly noteworthy. Its orientation is also quite unusual, as from the interior one can see the “Peña de los Enamorados” (Lovers’ Rock), a place of great symbolism throughout history.

The Viera Dolmen, near Menga, is characterized by its narrow passage grave, with a small burial chamber at the far end. Its precise orientation allows the sun’s rays to illuminate the burial chamber at dawn on the spring and autumn equinoxes.
